Originating from a multimedia collaboration with the Atavist, an iPad magazine, The Last Clinic is still a work in progress.
In one of America’s more recent battles over reproductive health care, tensions are high in the battle for Mississippi’s last abortion clinic. Mississippi has some of the worst teen pregnancy, infant mortality and maternal mortality rates in the nation, but rather than expand reproductive health services and education, some women’s health care providers are under attack.
Over the last several years, the pro-life movement has successfully sponsored laws that have forced the closure of all but one abortion clinic. Now, if the state of Mississippi wins an ongoing legal battle over a 2012 law concerning hospital admitting privileges that the clinic could not come in compliance with, Mississippi will become the first state without access to legal abortion care inside state lines.
